Transitioning to adulthood can be stressful for families for many reasons, especially if your child has been working with their mental health professional for a while and will need to switch to an adult provider. This switch can definitely be hard, but we have 5 tips for you to make the change go as smoothly as possible:
1. First, plan ahead. If you know your child will be transitioning to adult care, start having these conversations with them and their current provider several months in advance. This will give your child the opportunity to process the eventual separation and prepare to meet with someone new.
2. Ask your child’s current provider if they have a recommendation or referral for adult services. Your family may have peace of mind knowing that your current professional trusts the new provider.
3. If your child will be transitioning to college as well, check into the resources available at their new school. Many college campuses have counseling centers open to students, making it more convenient for young adults to receive mental health services.
4. Begin to work with your child on managing their mental health care, including appointment reminders or remembering to take medication. These responsibilities can be a big shift, so start early and help them slowly begin to take over these tasks.
5. Ask your child’s current provider to provide helpful information to the new provider. This will make the transition smoother for your child and help the new professional to be more informed.
