Thanks to the hidden hand of globalization and the transfer of political power to supranational institutions, prior to recent events, the nation state appeared to be a lost cause. Nationalism of any shade is often dismissed as a pretext for racism or small-mindedness. Yet anti-colonial, nationalist independence movements were once understood as progressive, whilst distinctions could be made between civic nationalism and chauvinism. Furthermore, the nation state is thus far the only means through which humanity has successfully asserted democratic sovereignty. At the same time, transnational institutions weaken the the ties between government and the governed through so-called 'pooled sovereignty.' This debate explores this hostility to the nation state and asks if the right to national self-determination needs championing in the modern world.
