Man, the awesome levels just keep coming! I had one that I was planning to upload a few days ago, but it keeps getting pushed farther back while I continually discover more pressing stuff! Hopefully it'll get the rate it deserves in the meantime, but today I wanted to upload GLHF, which was a request in Viprin's server. This level is just such a great time that I couldn't stop myself from showcasing it here as well! As usual, I'm going to copy over my review but still add some additional thoughts at the end as well.
"Frequently I’ll use the word “banger” to describe levels that I had a blast playing. But that’s not a real Geometry Dash term, so let’s define it! To me, bangers always have energetic, fast paced songs with an occasional main melody that gets woven in. The gameplay is fun and sight readable to match this, letting the player feel like a pro while jamming out to the track. Finally, the sync is on point with either effects, pulsing, or both! Of course these are loose criteria, but either way it lets me validate my own argument when I call glhf a banger! This level is so much fun, and it was actually comical because I was confused why orbs weren’t dropping when I hit new records. I must be blind, because I could have sworn this was rated when I opened it - but now I’ll strongly advocate that it should be!
The decoration here is reminiscent of Alkali, TamaN, and/or Tongii, with older designs being enhanced to fit modern day standards. One example of what I mean can be found at 72%; the font there is made up of branches, something you’d likely see back in 1.9 or earlier. But in spite of that there’s additionally all sorts of movement, pulsing, custom backgrounds, and little effects which add to the experience. Without any of these the level would have blended in perfectly to an older version of the game, but with them it transforms into a modern day contender. While the block designs aren’t complex, they still work due to the variation between each one. I’m having a hard time illustrating exactly what I mean, so I’d encourage you to play the level (or just watch the video) to see what I mean!
Aside from this, the gameplay is additionally top tier since it’s incredibly fun. The song choice certainty helps with this, but no credibility should be taken away from Wetols for their original layout - it definitely slaps. Each input is sewn so well together with the previous one, creating a rhythmic flow that guides the player along in accordance with beats from the track. The only interruption are the fake blue orbs occasionally nested inside blocks, which tricked me every time in my practice run. But even those weren’t enough to generate frustration, as they initiated little messages to pop up using the death effect trigger to poke fun at me for being so gullible. It’s also just a natural excuse to play the level again, so I didn’t mind at all!"
There's this indescribable last point that I wanted to at least attempt to touch on here, but naturally it's difficult to do so. I think it can best be seen if you step back from any grading criteria and just watch the playthrough back, immersing yourself in its contents. I've done so several times when writing this review, and I can feel the energy coursing through me as I witness the level countless times. I also just love Boomkitty as an artist, and especially so with Rebound. The way the main melody is introduced in the beginning, expanded upon in the drop, and finally cycles back to just the main chorus itself in the end is such an awesome course for development. Wetols handled the visualization of that well; I liked having a fast introduction, a faster drop, and a nice slow bit at the end to go out with some significance.
In short, I'm hoping that glhf receives an epic rating as an 8*. It was requested as a demon, but I personally feel that it's not difficult enough to be one. The 8* is because it's super fun; normally the insane levels that are more challenging and frustrating receive a 9*. I'm also advocating for an epic because I literally can't find any feedback to give, although if glhf were to be featured I'd be just as ecstatic. Anyways I thoroughly enjoyed this level and I hope you will too!
