I always thought the song MacArthur Park was simultaneously ridiculous and brilliant. Don't get me wrong, this is a compliment to Jimmy Webb, who wrote the song about a real place that I've been to in Los Angeles. Over the past several years, I got into the habit of playing both Donna Summer's and Maynard Ferguson's versions in my dressing rooms or tour busses backstage as I would do makeup and get dressed before shows. I'd sing along to every (strange) word and note and make weird animated faces at myself in the mirror. It served to either blow off steam to calm me down pre-show, OR had the opposite effect of warming me up if I felt lethargic, so it was used in either case.
I used the song for just about EVERYTHING...except I never, under any circumstances, would perform it on an album or on stage. This tune was reserved to be sung and danced to in the private or among only very close friends.
But that was all before circumstances shut the world down and I found myself alone at home a lot more often with a lot of time to think. I either came to my senses or made a huge mistake, but here I am, performing it in public and in this music video.
I hear someone initially rejected Jimmy Webb's epic song because of its "ambitious arrangement and unorthodox lyrics." Well, Jimmy, I don't pretend to be as good a songwriter as you but I also have had work rejected for the exact same reasons. And I happen to love MacArthur Park. According to its chart-topping record-breaking plays, I'm not the only one.
My new album STANDARD has come out today, and this is on that album. Listen to the whole thing right here: [ Ссылка ]

Lyrics:
Someone left my cake out in the rain
Oh no oo
Spring was never waiting for us dear
it ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Oo oo la la la la la la
Between the parted pages we’re pressed
In love’s hot fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants
Like a striped pair of pants
A striped pair of
Oh oh oh oo
Macarthur park is melting in the dark
All the sweet green icing flowing down
Someone left my cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
Cuz it took too long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again
Oh no
Oh no
No
Mm I’ll never have that recipe
Never gonna have that recipe
I’ll never have that recipe again, hah
I will take my life into my hands oo oo oo oo oo oo
Whoah ah
After all the loves of my life
Ah ah
Macarthur park is melting in the dark
All the sweet green icing flowing down
Someone left my cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
Cuz it took too long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again
Never again
Oh no
Someone left my cake out in the rain
whoah
I’ll never have that recipe
Never gonna have that recipe again
