Oscar ““Holy Hand” Schmidt was like the “Larry Bird” of Brazil.
By 25, The 6’9 small forward won 2 Brazilian championships and multiple scoring titles. So when the NBA invited Oscar to the 1984 NBA draft it was well earned. The 84’ draft class was stacked. Hakeem, Jordan and Barkley all went in the top 5.
But Oscar was drafted by the Nets embarrassingly late. Insulted, Oscar turned down a contract. His Brazilian International team was too important to give up for the NBA
The decision paid off.
