Mercedes Benz is renowned for making some of the world’s best luxury cars. However, not all luxury cars are created equal. The S Class is Mercedes’s top tier luxury sedans. You buy the S-Class not to drive in but to be driven in.
The S Class is made with one purpose in mind, the passenger! Luxury, comfort, performance all are needed to make the passenger happy, but at the end of the day, what matters most is safety. Mercedes has always been a pioneer in car safety, introducing new safety features over the years. The upcoming 2021 Mercedes S Class is a testament to Mercedes’s innovation and ingenuity when it comes to safety features.
The all-new 2021 Mercedes S Class (W223) has its world premiere on 2nd September, but Mercedes has given sneak peeks of what the 2021 S-Class might offer. We can talk all day about the new interior, performance metrics, its features and gadgets, but what stands out the most is its next generation of safety features.
Rear Seat Airbags
Let’s start with the newest addition of safety feature in the car industry. The Rear-seat airbags. The 2021 S-Class will be the first to feature rear-seat airbags. The most important people that often sit in the S-Class will be in the rear seats so naturally, Mercedes made sure that they remain safe. In total, the new S-Class will have an astonishing 16 airbags.
Due to the wide variation in rear passenger’s size and seating positions, conventional airbags with a single large cushion cannot be used.
The goal was to account for the variations that might occur depending on the rear seating conditions; for example, there might be adults, children or child seats in any given combination. So, Mercedes come up with a new and very flexible design. It’s basically a tent that catches the passenger like a baseball glove. Here’s how.
Its housed in the back of the front seats. In case of a collision, a gas charge similar to that used in usual airbags inflates a series of tubes, these tubes identical to tent poles provide structure to a special flexible cloth “skin” that sucks ambient air as it is stretched and opened, making a small cube-like room inside it. Air can only leave this room through vents in order to release pressure as the occupant impacts the bag. This newly formed tent-like airbag absorbs the impact of the passenger, and the flexible tubes morph and bend around objects in the rear seats that aren't human beings, including child seats and cargo. Basically, acting like a baseball glove where the tubes are the outer edges of the glove and the tent-like airbag the centre palm pocket.
The only downside, the centre rear-seat passenger, is kind of out of luck—with no front seat ahead of them.
E Active body control and Pre-Safe Impulse Side
The next latest safety feature lets the S-Class body to elevate just before a side collision. The S-Class raises itself so its sturdy sill and frame take the hit just like we raise our mighty arms in case of an attack to protect our precious face or body.
This safety feature is named the E-Active body control Suspension. The E-Active body control system consists of five multi-core processors, more than 20 sensors, and a stereo camera to actively predict and respond to various driving situations. This fully-active 48-volt system can analyze driving situation up to 1,000 times per second. This system works for both comfort and safety.
Here’s how it works
Radar Sensors in car recognize the impending side collision and send the signal to the control unit. Within milliseconds the E-Active body control air suspension lifts the entire S-Class up to 8cm depending on the triggering time and chassis setting. The increased height allows the major part of the impact to be absorbed by the sill and frame of the car instead of the door. Both the front and rear passengers benefit from this safety feature. And that’s not all. The E- Active body control function also works in tandem with another innovative safety feature called the Pre Safe Impulse Side function. This function activates rapidly inflating side air cushions in the seats putting the driver or front passenger in the most effective side that is towards the centre of the vehicle just before the side impact. This will work whether the impact is from right or left.
Improved Heads up navigation and Cluster Gauge Readability
With ever-increasing features, modern cars are getting cluttered with display screens and buttons; these cause the driver to lose focus and get confused, sometimes resulting in accidents. The 2021 S-Class will have 27 less mechanical switches as compared to the previous generation.
