The much-loved WRX wagon has been missing from the Subaru linep for a full generation, but it's about to be kinda back with the new Levorg.
The closest we got with the previous WRX was the hatchback model, and the current Rex has moved to a sedan only.
It's pretty much the same as the WRX from the rear wheels forward, but the longer rear overhang gives it almost as much storage space as the last Liberty wagon.
The back seat is also more spacious than you'd think, with clever packaging making it also a near match for the last Liberty wagon.
Therefore, the Levorg will play the role of WRX wagon, as well as substitute the Liberty wagon that was never made for the sixth-generation model.
Under the bonnet is the same 2.0 litre turbocharged flat four as the WRX, but the Levorg will only be available with the CVT auto.
The Levorg is only 43kg heavier than the equivalent WRX, so it's still a mighty quick machine.
The grip of the all-wheel drive tied with the auto makes it pretty idiot-proof at speed, meaning you can really toss it through the bends and jump on the power very early out of corners.
We've only driven it on a smooth circuit for now, but the Levorg feels to have lost none of the excellent dynamics that has made the WRX such a success.
We can't wait to see how Subaru manage to price the Levorg for Australia, but if its close to WRX, it'll make a cracking addition to the Australian lineup.
