I love my patients and I love what I do. And that’s why the US healthcare system breaks my heart in how it fails patients. Here are the top ways I see my patients taken advantage of, especially around surgery, because vulnerable patients can be more easily exploited, sadly.
I am so grateful for pharmaceutical companies that provide life saving medications to my patients inside and outside the operating room. But there’s another side to the “big pharma” equation that we’ll talk about. Unfortunately, it pushes patients to another extreme in medicine: the alternative medicine wagon.
Like “big pharma,” alternative medicine can also be an empowering, safe, and effective tool for so many patients. But there’s such little evidence, and so much money to be made in this underregulated field, that many vulnerable patients can be taken advantage of, too.
Lastly, in the operating room, these forces collide to disempower my patients in ways they don’t even understand. Surgery is such a vulnerable, and expensive, time for patients. The healthcare system should be doing everything it can to provide the highest quality and value of care to patients before, during, and after surgery.
But it rarely happens, and it hurts me to see so many patients with missed opportunities. Especially around mental health, like anxiety, depression, addiction, and trauma leading to PTSD. These mental health challenges can pop up around the time of surgery, and these mental health conditions can worsen after surgery.
Recovering from surgery is hard enough! I don’t want my patients to have mental health challenges added on top of that.
