Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is a brilliant novel that has a profound impact on the readers.
Kya & her family lived in a small cabin in a marsh on the coast of North Carolina. Besides tremendous poverty, Kya & the other children had to put up with the abusive & drunkard father. One day Kya's mother left all of a sudden. She couldn't take it any more. One by one the other children left. Finally Kya's father left.
Little Kya grew up amidst the plants & animals of the Marsh. It was as if the Marsh took up the abandoned child under her care. Kya learned to study the sea shells & birds. She was called the Marsh Girl by the locals. A black couple took care of Kya. Eventually Kya met Tate , a friend of her brother Jodie. Tate taught Kya to read & write. But he left for college. He promised to return but didn't return. Kya remained alone again.
Years passed. Kya met Chase Andrews. She gave him a gift of a necklace made from a particular seashell. Chase liked it & always wore it round her neck. But he had made false promises. Kya realised that she had been played by Chase when she found Chase engaged. Meanwhile Tate came back. He asked for forgiveness & helped Kya to publish her books on wildlife. Jodie came back for his sister too.
After a while Chase tried to come back to Kya's life. When Kya refused to let him in. Chase became violent & attacked Kya. He beat her up. Two men saw the cruelty . But Kya knew no one would come to help her.
Once when Kya visited her publisher, Chase Andrews body was found near a fire tower. Evidences were against Kya. Th necklace that Chase wore was missing. Kya though arrested was later released without any proper evidence of crime committed by her.
Kya earned great respect & money as a wildlife researcher.
She came back to her Marsh home which was now well furnished. Tate moved in. Then at the age of 64 Kya died peacefully. One day while searching for Kya's will Tate came across the necklace that Chase wore round his neck. There were poems that made it clear that Chase had been killed by Kya. But Tate kept Kya's secret locked in his heart forever...
