Daniel Türk studied keyboard with his father, and then with the noted composer Johann Adam Hiller. Later, he studied under Gottfried August Homilius, who had been a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach. In our day, Türk is mainly known for his “Klavierschule” (“school of keyboard playing”), an excellent treatise on this art. Also, many beginner’s books for piano contain little pieces that he wrote. However, Türk was also a master of larger forms, as this sonata, published in a set with five others in 1789, amply shows. He was yet another composer who had been influenced by, and had absorbed the style of, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Nonetheless, his works do not “steal” from Bach; rather, they are quite original in their musical material. Türk died two weeks after his 63rd birthday, of liver disease.
