Why do Hindus perform Deity worship? Is Idol worship a sin? Is Deity worship and Idol worship the same? What is the real significance of deity worship? In this episode of Questions & Answers on the path of spirituality, Swami Mukundananda explains in detail the science behind deity worship in Hinduism.

Answering the question of Idol worship in Hinduism, Swami Mukundananda explains that 99.99% of Hindus who perform deity worship are aware of the omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresent aspect of God and that they just don't limit God to the stone idol. Hindus use the deities, images of God as a tangible way to grow their devotion and love.

Swamiji further goes on to explain, the concept of having some form of symbols, images or deities of God is not unique to Hinduism infact is a very common in all religions of the world. In Muslim religion, devotees face in the direction of the Kaaba when offering their prayer, using Kabba as a symbol to feel the presence of God.
Similarly in Christianity, christians use symbol of the Cross and deities of Mother Mary to pray. In Buddhism the idol of Bhudda is very common and other symbols like Yin Yang which are used to feel the presence of divinity.

Swamiji explains that all these symbols & idols are different aspects of deity worship, derived with the sole goal to help the devotees feel the presence of God.

Deity worship offers an easy way especially for devotees in early stage of devotion to feel the presence of God. Swamiji explains the best kind of deity worship is when the devotee makes the image of God in the mind.
