How Tofu is Made
The main ingredients in tofu manufacturing are dried soybeans, water, and coagulants (otherwise known as thickening agents) like calcium sulfate or magnesium chloride.
Tofu making is a detailed process that starts with some good ol’ soybeans, grown in places like the U.S., Brazil, and China, where the soil is just right. Farmers there use both conventional and innovative farming practices to harvest, making sure the beans pass the vibe check. Once harvested, these beans need to soak in water before they're turned into tofu. Depending on the temperature, soaking can take different times.
