Semi-empirical mass formula supports alpha decay from nuclei having mass number greater than 150.Alpha decay can not be explained on the basis of classical mechanics. Alpha particle inside a nucleus is just in an attractive potential well. The height of the potential barrier just at the surface of the nucleus is much greater than the kinetic energy of the alpha particle, so classically alpha particle can not escape from the nucleus.
