Could there actually be a coherent curriculum of techniques that are banned in combat sports, but still be applied realistically? I believe this 1994 video release accomplished this dichotomy in the Martial Arts.
Before the UFC exposed the lack or reality based training in most dojo’s, the common catch phrase was:
“I would never compete, our techniques are too dangerous and only for survival… 🙄
There was a brief trend of selling tapes that had instant “fight ending” strikes, death or KO touches, “anti-grappling” or other esoteric moves that would probably get YOU actually hurt in a street confrontation!
Although I believe there is some credibility in this philosophy, the underlying problem is that it’s impossible to “pressure test” jabbing someone’s eye out or finishing a sequence with a traumatic head butt.
The bottom line is this. It’s easier for the school that has a component of combat sport training, sparring and rolling to integrate the “deadlier” and dirtier techniques for street survival than the other way around.
An over exposure to static, 1 step self defense training may leave you unprepared to handle some of the more physical attributes required in combat sports: pain tolerance, timing, flexibility, speed, power, endurance, will, reflexes or just plain old getting your ass kicked every so often.
That said, please don’t use these techniques in class sparring …they are too dangerous! 😊
