Karl Johnstone (Rongowhakaata, Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri) delivers his keynote at Nui Te Kōrero 2017: Talking about Diversity. Karl explains the concept of 'culturalpreneurship', which includes taking risks and challenging convention, status quo and intergenerational complacencies. He gives examples of how developing opportunities from the heart of communities adds depth and value to a kaupapa, the community and the organisations and audiences involved.
Karl lives in Gisborne and is the owner of Haumi (NZ) Ltd, a specialist cultural development business. It develops and delivers projects of national and international significance in partnership with major organisations, iwi affiliated Māori
and a network of international entities. He is also a member of Creative New Zealand's Arts Council.
Karl specialises in concept and product development and strategy.
He has extensive experience in cultural diplomacy, cultural centre and exhibition development, project direction and content development. He is a regular presenter at international conferences and integrates his formal learning in fine arts and education with his passion and experience in kaupapa Māori (iwi driven initiatives).
Karl has worked in the cultural heritage sector for more than 20 years, including eight years at Te Papa and eight years as the director of the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. He is also a member of Te Arataki Wānanga, a Māori advisory group for the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
