Russell Shorto, acclaimed author of "The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America" and the curator of "New York Before New York: The Castello Plan of New Amsterdam," discusses some of the stories behind the exhibition, including a map depicting New Amsterdam at its height, a letter discussing the "purchase" of Manhattan by the Dutch from the Lenape, and a collection of artifacts known as Mpungu, attributed to Africans living in the colony who were likely enslaved.
