Directed by Sergio Sollima (1921-2015) and co-written with Alberto Silvestri (1922-2001), this Italian adventure film stars Indian actor Kabir Bedi, Massimo Foschi, Mirella D'Angelo, French actor Philippe Leroy, Sal Borgese (noted for his extensive work in the Italian film industry), Adolfo Celi (1922-1986), actor and stuntman Franco Fantasia (1924-2002), Argentine actor Néstor Garay (1931-2003), and British actress Teresa Ann Savoy (1955-2017). Following on from the acclaimed 1976 television series (also directed by Sollima), the film chronicles the adventures of the titular pirate who, with his motley crew, sets out to finally claim the land that rightfully belongs to him after fighting against the colonial powers of the Dutch and British empires in Southeast Asia. Sandokan is a formidable fighter, brave, and ruthless with his enemies, but kind, generous, and faithful to his friends. He has absolute leadership over his men, and is often shown as having no fear, with Yanez de Gomera (played here by Philippe Leroy) playing as a sort of counterweight to his impulsive nature.
Based on a series of popular swashbuckler novels penned by Italian author Emilio Salgari (1862-1911), the first cinematic entries into the series were made in 1941 in Italy with Luigi Pavese (1897-1969) as Sandokan. These were followed by a series of four Italian-made films (all from 1964) with American leads. The first two: 'Sandokan the Great and 'The Pirates of Malaysia starred American bodybuilder Steve Reeves (1926-2000) as the Malaysian rebel Sandokan. The adventures continued with 'Sandokan Against the Leopard of Sarawak and 'Sandokan to the Rescue, this time with American actor Ray Danton (1931-1992) taking on the role of Sandokan. These were followed by 'The Tigers of Mompracem (1970) with Ivan Rassimov (1938-2003) as Sandokan, and the television shows 'The Return of Sandokan (1996) and 'The Son of Sandokan (1998) featuring Kabir Bedi reprising his role as the Malaysian pirate. A reboot is apparently due in late 2025. The production will star Turkish actor Can Yaman as Sandokan with Italian actor Luca Argentero as Yanez, his loyal sidekick.
At the time of release, a 45rpm single was issued featuring two tracks that included the 'Sandokan song by Oliver Onions (a pseudonym of the De Angelis brothers) which became a popular hit in several European countries, albeit mostly in the translated English version. The theme song perfectly captured the spirit of adventure and loyalty depicted in the film, and the repeated mention of Sandokan throughout the song reinforces the character's role as a symbol of strength and courage. Despite a proper digital restoration, some imperfections (which already existed on the original sources) have unfortunately remained. Nevertheless, the music is catchy and captivating, with the main theme reprised in several variations with mandola and strings, flute, reverberated harps and bells, and in vocal version. Sitar was performed by both Maurizio De Angelis and Enrico Ciacci (1942-2018).
