This video deals with Navy Frogmen and their involvement during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. SEAL involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan will be dealt with in a later video.
World War II - Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDU) or Navy Frogmen came into prominence in both the European and Pacific Theaters of War. Frogmen were tasked with clearing obstacles placed on enemy beaches, by the enemy, to disrupt and/or prevent assault landings.
Korea - Navy Frogmen were given the new designation "Underwater Demolition Teams" (UDT) and while still charged with the task of clearing obstacles, from beaches, their job was expanded and now included destroying factories, bridges, and rail roads. This expansion of duties proved highly successful and served as a lead-in to what Navy SEALS do today.
Vietnam - Both UDT and SEAL Teams served in Vietnam but in a whole different capacity. By now a totally new type of fighting had to be learned and implemented and it's name was "Jungle Warfare." Frogmen were required to learn how to fight like their enemy, the Vietcong, and they did this and did it better than the enemy thought possible. UDT and SEAL Teams fought side by side in Vietnam and were charged with similar responsibilities.
