Widescreen 2.20:1 aspect ratio cheat sheet with pixel resolutions for most standard frame sizes, from 720p all the way up to 8K.
The 2.20:1 aspect ratio (also referred to as 2.2:1 or simply 2.20) was popularized in the 1950s with the introduction of the Todd-AO widescreen 70mm film format, developed by Mike Todd and United Artists Theaters in partnership with the American Optical Company.
The first two films to make use of the new high-resolution format were Oklahoma! (1955) and Around the World in 80 Days (1956).
The 70mm Todd-AO process and aspect ratio was soon adopted by Panavision, Cinerama and others.
David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) are two of the more notable films shot in Super Panavision 70mm 2.20:1 aspect ratio. Both directors chose the widescreen format, in part, for the sweeping cinematic qualities it allowed.
Although used far less frequently these days, the 2.20:1 aspect ratio is a nice middle ground between ultra-widescreen aspect ratios like 2.76:1 or 2.55:1 of the past and the more common 16:9 ratio we most often see on YouTube.
The 2.20 aspect ratio is not completely obsolete, however. Oliver Stone opted for it for Born on the Fourth of July (1989), as did David Fincher as recently as 2020 with the black and white feature Mank.
To resize your videos to this aspect ratio, divide the width of your source footage by 2.2. The resulting value will be the required height.
For example, if your original footage was shot in 4K UHD, dividing 3840 by 2.2 equals 1745 (which we have rounded down to 1744*). So, your final 2.20:1 resolution would be 3840x1744.
We’ve uploaded this test video and cheat sheet to make things a little easier, and to give you an idea how 2.20 footage displays in the YouTube player on different devices.
* NOTES ON ROUNDING
For this video, all vertical values have been rounded down to the nearest even integer. Some mastering services prefer this to better support field encoding and/or codec requirements. We recommend confirming your final delivery ratio before filming.
True vertical values (closest whole number) are included in brackets below:
8K = 8192x3722 (3724)
8K UHD = 7680x3490 (3491)
6K = 6144x2792 (2793)
5K = 5120x2326 (2327)
4K = 4096x1860 (1862)
4K UHD = 3840x1744 (1745)
3K = 3072x1396 (1396)
3K UHD = 2880x1308 (1309)
2K = 2048x 930 (931)
1080p = 1920x872 (873)
720p = 1280x580 (582)
