Federal ministers Bill Blair (emergency Preparedness), Dominic LeBlanc (intergovernmental affairs, infrastructure and communities) and Marco Mendicino (public safety) speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal government calls an independent inquiry into its decision to invoke the Emergencies Act to end protests against COVID-19 restrictions. The federal Emergencies Act requires an inquiry to be called 60 days after a declaration of an emergency is revoked or expired.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Act on February 14, 2022, and revoked it on February 23. Ontario Justice Paul Rouleau has been named as the commissioner of the inquiry. He will submit a final report to the House of Commons and the Senate by Feb. 20, 2023.
