The Pentagon says Russian military aircraft have conducted a series of what were described as aggressive over-flights of an American naval ship in the Baltic Sea.
A U.S. defense official said that, in one incident earlier this week, a Russian fighter jet flew just nine meters above a destroyer.
The U.S. says the Sukhoi SU-24 warplanes were carrying no visible weapons and the ship, the USS Donald Cook,... took no action.
Calls from the ship's crew to the Russian jets went unanswered.
The commander of the missile destroyer described the flights as a "simulated attack".
The White House called the incident "entirely inconsistent with professional norms of militaries."
