After key victories over China and Russia in the preceding decades, rising military power Japan partnered with the Allies, capturing German territories in Asia-Pacific areas. Meanwhile, the United States maintained forces in both China and the Philippines and joined Japan and other Allied states in military operations during the Russian Revolution.
