The average person poops 1 time and pees 6-8 times in a day.
This is an average so there are days when we pee and poop more, and days when we pee and poop less.
But let’s assume for the sake of math that everyone is utterly average and poops 1 time and pees 7 times a day. (7 is right between 6 and 8 after all)
This would mean that 1/8 of the times someone goes to the bathroom, it’s to poop. And 7/8 of the time someone (male or female) goes to the bathroom, it’s to pee.
I’m also going to assume that the population is perfectly split 50/50 between males and females. I’m also going to assume all males pee standing up and poop sitting down, and that all females both pee and poop sitting down.
This means that after you’re done with the bathroom, the next person to use the toilet has an equal chance of being male or female.
If the next person to use the toilet is male, then he has a 12.5% chance of needing the seat to be down, and an 87.5% chance of it needing to be up.
If the next person to use the toilet is a female, then she has a 100% chance of needing the seat to be down.
Calculating this out for the next person to use the toilet, we can see that:
f(toilet seat up) is (50%male * 87.5%pee) + (50% female * 0% pee and poop) = 43.75%
and
f(toilet seat down) is (50% male * 12.5%poop) + (50% female * 100% pee and poop) = 56.25%
