Speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Tuesday, Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam was asked when, in her medical opinion, Canadians can expect professional sports in some form or fashion to begin being played again in this country.
Tam was also asked if she feels that holding professional sports in an empty arean or other venue, devoid of fans, was a safe compromise to allow the return of pro sports in Canada.
As of Tuesday morning, Canada has hit 37,374 total cases of COVID-19, with 1,728 total deaths.
Sports fans hoping for a fast return to the games they love might need to temper their expectations. Although sports leagues talk publicly about their desire to return to competition before summer, those are best-case scenarios.
The possibility of professional sports resuming without fans is growing. And a recent poll suggests a majority of fans wouldn't feel safe attending games anyway without a vaccine for the new coronavirus.
One sports business expert says losses of fan-related revenue will be substantial even if clubs begin cashing in on lucrative media rights deals again. Losses could reach $3 billion among the NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer.
