On D-Day, June 6, 1944, the Battle for Pegasus Bridge was a critical engagement during the Normandy landings. British airborne troops, specifically the 6th Airborne Division, were tasked with securing Pegasus Bridge and nearby structures to prevent German reinforcements from reaching the invasion beaches. In a daring and meticulously planned WW2 operation, Horsa glider-borne troops towed by Halifax Bombers, under the command of Major John Howard, successfully captured the bridge in a surprise assault. Despite facing fierce German resistance, the British paratroopers managed to hold the bridge until relieved by ground forces. The capture of Pegasus Bridge played a pivotal role in securing the eastern flank of the Normandy invasion and facilitated the Allies' advance inland.
