Of all the things to put Toronto on the Disney map, it’s a movie about puberty. And ya know what? It’s a great movie at that! Writer and director, Domee Shi pulled her inspiration straight from some very nostalgic places. One of which was anime, and the other was boy bands. Curious to know which ones? Give the video to watch! The inspiration for Mei came straight from Domee herself. Not just character traits but also goofy things she remembers doing as a kid. This includes one scene she’s just a bit embarrassed by. There was some super awesome technology created to help with representation on screen, which is a step in the right direction! There was one cut pickup line that got replaced that you’ve just have to hear. We’ve got a little bit on the recording process for Rosalie Chiang and the band. And we also have the inside scoop on some of the earlier drafts of Turning Red. Would you believe us if we said there were gangsters at one point? And also, Mei’s red panda had an extra special ability but it was just too complicated for the animators to pull off. It’s a first for Pixar to have an all-female creative team, and the team is just stoked about it. And finally, this movie is embracing the chunky cute. They’re not shying away from the little things that make each person unique. Hopefully, future movies follow Turning Red’s lead and start implementing some of the beautiful technology and authenticity that this movie managed to incorporate.
