⚜️Physical fitness is a tool that all protectors should have that comes from a skill of maintenance.
Many people have lots to say about hard skills training but to me, it simply comes down to one thing. Yes, our daily functions are usually nothing more than a synthesis of soft skills and that is hopefully the way it will always be. Especially if we are doing our jobs hopefully things will stay that way.
However, the other side of that same reality is simply that we are hired to protect people. We simply cannot think of every single contingency and even if we could there would still be a realistic possibility for physical violence… Every human being walking this planet right now actually has to deal with the fact that at some point today they may be confronted with violence for thousands of different reasons some of which are not even their fault.
The difference between those innocent civilians and our clients is simply that our clients hire us for PROTECTION. Protection is not, has not, and will never just simply be anything more than a soft, cuddly, Jell-O bowl of soft skills. It has to be more than that and even though we hope never to use our hard skills, those tools must be sharp.
And they must be sharpened daily so that if and when we need them we can bring them to bear. Hopefully, we are good enough and lucky enough never to have to use them but if our number comes up we better not be found wanting because that is the most dishonorable thing that can happen.
I was never in the Secret Service but during my time as a Marine Corps infantryman in Iraq I got to learn lessons like this time and time again, as a bouncer I continue learning, and then as I got into cleaner more white glove protection positions within the realm of executive protection I noticed that many of those men who don’t have calluses on their hands would like to conveniently forget these facts… Not me and not the guys I roll with because I’ve seen what happens when things get so comfortable we lose touch with reality.
