We’ve visited Aufeas Mine before, but this time we brought our kids.
Not much is known in ways of records about this mine located 1000ft up Wardle Creek. Aufeas was discovered in 1909 but not worked on much until 1914, when an aerial tram linked the lower adit with the road. The tram was later removed and a system of rawhiding was introduced. Mined for gold and silver, the ore was hand picked, then shipped to Tacoma for smelting. Because of its high arsenic content, the ore incurs high penalties during treatment and required well over 3/4oz of Gold per ton to make the mine a commercial success. The average grade is 1.08oz/ton for gold and 1oz/ton for silver.
To whomever left the skeleton: Haha very funny!! Glad it wasn’t me who found it, but we DID leave it for your next unsuspecting victim!! Quite a lot of thought was put into placement with dynamite box and all!! 🤣🤣
Disclaimer: Mines are dangerous! Know before you go and prepare yourself to the best of your ability!! Mines are unstable and an unpredictable environment. Toxic gases, loose rocks and false floors are only just a few of the hazards you should be aware of!!
