T-80 is a third-generation main battle tank designed and manufactured in the Soviet Union era. When it entered service in 1976, it was the first MBT in the world to feature a powerful multifuel turbine engine as its main propulsion. The Russian Army is keeping the T-80 tanks for service in colder areas. T-80BVM is a further variant of the T-80BV main battle tank incorporating some improvements and new features introduced with the T-90MS tank. The T-80BVM tank brings the tank more in line with modern standards.
Russia today operates around 4,500 T-80 main battle tanks of all variants. Due to high operational costs these tanks are being kept in reserve currently the main operational tanks of the Russian Army are the T-90 and overhauled or upgraded versions of the T-72. The main reason is that these tanks with conventional diesel engines are less expensive to operate and maintain than the T-80s. Earlier it was planned that all Russian T-80 series tanks will be retired by 2015. However in 2017 Russian MoD signed a contract to refurbish and upgrade a total of 62 T-80BV tanks to the T-80BVM standard in order to keep them in operational service.
