FSEG director, Prof Ed Galea was interviewed on the BBC WorldService 'Weekend' programme this morning (16 April 2016 07:50 GMT+1) concerning the new 6 month escalator trial due to commence on the 18 April 2016 at Holborn Underground Station in London.
FSEG research concerning escalators from 2008 to 2012, which included modelling using the buildingEXODUS software, suggested that improved flow performance could be achieved if both lanes were used for standing passengers. A short 3 week trial late last year conducted by the Dept for Transport at Holborn underground station in London confirmed these observations. The new trials at Holborn underground station will determine if the improved performance can be sustained over a long period and if pedestrians will follow the request to ride on both sides of the escalator during periods of heavy congestion.
