This is Hiroo Onoda, the last Japanese soldier to surrender in the Philippines in 1974. During World War II, Onoda was sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines, but after Allied forces took over the island, he and three other soldiers retreated to the mountains. In 1974, Hiroo Onoda was eventually found, his uniform still intact, a working rifle, sword and grenades. His superior officer, still alive, was then flown to the Philippines to order him to give up. The Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos even pardoned him of any charges. Hiroo Onoda's story became very famous, and he later returned to Japan where he became a well-known speaker and author before his death in 2014 at the age of 91. Hiroo Onoda was regarded a hero.
