A rare form, of the runner up for best selling single in Australia in 1980! 'Turning Japanese' by The Vapors, a British act, was an instant classic, in part because of its irresistible refrain; in part due to the controversial lyrical subtext. Beginning its ascent up the Aussie charts from the end of April, 'Turning Japanese' reached the top spot, where it stayed for two weeks, also enjoying a three month position within the Top 10 and five in the Top 40. It also was a #1 in Canada, a #3 at home in England and just #36 in America. Fearing this would make them one hit wonders, The Vapors released this song as their 2nd 7 inch, but even in Britain despite a couple of Top 50 singles, this would be their only hit; likewise the rest of the world.
