Practitioner Workshop: Developing Inclusive Approaches to Address the Nexus of Gender, Climate and Conflict

The climate crisis is the existential threat of our time. Today, nearly all of the top 20 countries most exposed to climate change are also experiencing violence, instability, or armed conflict and 13 of them host a UN humanitarian response. Climate change exacerbates underlying conditions like water and food insecurity, economic hardship, humanitarian crises and political fragility. These impacts can weaken social cohesion, further entrench pre-existing vulnerabilities and patterns of discrimination, and in some cases, provoke new or renewed conflict.

Research has shown that women are disproportionately impacted by both climate change and conflict. Less access to aid or material resources means they experience additional challenges absorbing, coping with and responding to climate impacts and shocks. However, women’s position on the frontlines of the climate crisis also means they are uniquely placed to contribute to sustainable natural resource management and climate resilience which strengthen the conditions for peace and security in their communities.

This interactive workshop is intended for peacebuilding and development practitioners and will follow a World Café format to facilitate knowledge sharing among practitioners working at the intersections of gender, climate, and conflict. Through progressive dialogue rounds participants will reflect on their experiences working to address these overlapping challenges. The goal of the workshop will be to identify synergies between practitioners working on various aspects of the nexus and outline best practices for inclusive response. Due to the highly interactive nature of the workshop format, participants will be asked to join with cameras on and come prepared to engage in small and large group discussions.
