Freetown is the capital city of Sierra Leone and is the heart of the Western region. It is on a peninsula on the south bank of the estuary of the Sierra Leone River. The city lies at the foot of the peninsula mountains and faces one of the best natural harbours on the west coast of Africa. The peninsula is home to some of the finest beaches in Africa - Lumley beach, Lakka beach, No. 2 river beach and Tokeh beach are some examples.
The main public beach close to Freetown itself facing the Atlantic with white sandy beach, shops, restaurants, hotels, golf course, as well local clubs. Being closest to town, it is always busy and often quite dirty. Head further is you want to see some fantastic beaches.
This wide sweep of beach has lost some of its atmosphere since the 2015 demolition of dozens of bamboo and thatch food shacks, and the numerous, ugly construction projects lining the beach road don't add to its appeal. During the week it feels deserted, save for a few joggers pounding the paved beach walkway, but it comes into its own on weekends and public holidays, when Freetown's residents come out to relax and party on the golden sands.
Walking along Lumley beach is a busy affair, especially in the evening. Young boys play football, young men go fishing and families relax in the humid weather.
People in Salone try everything they can to earn a living. For people who cannot afford to set up their own stores, they walk around with buckets on their head selling everything from drinks, tissues to nuts.
Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone, currently houses far more people than it is equipped to deal with. While living near a city has its advantages, it also has some negatives.
You have so many people vying for such few jobs, houses and food. Despite that, or perhaps because of that, people flock to Freetown and look to the town with awe.
“Living in Freetown is hard but it is great,” “Civilisation is so different here. Even if there aren’t enough jobs or money, there are so many people.”
“You start to make your own family with the people of Freetown who are experiencing the same struggles you are.”
