streets of a small town while an angry mob cursed, jeered, and spat at her.
This was the fate of thousands of women across Europe in nineteen forty-four and forty-five.
Accused, rightly or wrongly, of sleeping with German soldiers, they were publicly shamed by
neighbors venting their frustrations from the occupation.
But what were the real relationships between these women and the occupiers, and what
drove these scenes of cruelty and humiliation?
