Fall color begins creeping into the mountains of Tucker County, West Virginia as early as September every year. This part of the Appalachian Mountains behaves more like Vermont when it comes to the annual change of season.
A rule of thumb to follow for viewing peak autumn color in places like Dolly Sods Wilderness, Canaan Valley, and the Blackwater Canyon is to plan an extended visit anytime during the first two weeks of October, and into the third weekend. By the third week of October peak colors have moved into the entire Blackwater Canyon as well as Cheat River Valley. Otter Creek Wilderness and the mountain sides around Parsons, WV will now be in play.
