Extreme drought conditions in Mexico are causing an historic water shortage in the state of Nuevo Leon.
Reservoirs and rivers that supply water to some 5.3 million people in the Mexican city of Monterrey are about to run dry.
The state governor says people are experiencing an “extreme climate crisis”.
More than half of Mexico is currently facing moderate to severe drought conditions, according to CONAGUA, Mexico’s National Water Commission.
City officials in Monterrey, which is regarded as Mexico’s industrial capital, have been limiting water access to six hours a day.
The water shortage has led to growing public anger.
Mexico’s president has placed part of the blame for the water shortage on excessive extraction of water by bottling companies.
