The Road to Democracy in the Former Soviet Union is rarely straight.
Writing in the Wall Street Journal, a respected journalist, Mattew Kaminsky told a story about Yulia Tymoshenko. He starts of 1990s, when Yulia Tymoshenko was a pirate video entrepreneur and later successfully established herself in the gas industry.
With help of former Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko her United Energy Systems gained control of 10 percent of Ukraine's GDP, while in return Lazarenko received $120 million. Lazarenko was convicted in a U.S. prison but Tymoshenko remained free to reinvent herself.
The video takes a look at how Tymoshenko's adopted look of a peasant girl during the Orange Revolution and became Russia's best friend after signing the gas deal in 2009. She was convicted for abuse of office, but claimed the trial was politically motivated.
