Continuing on the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail through the Sierra Nevada mountains, one of the most remote stretches of trail. I had plans to get food at one location which hikers heading in the opposite direction as me were passing along word that it was closed! Should I ration my food? Should I see if I can yogi some snacks off JMT hikers? Or should I drop down from the mountains into one of the towns I had previously planned on skipping like Bishop, Mammoth, or VVR.

The scenery is stunning here and in the end my food problem is not that bad, I've gone further with less. It just means at the end of each day I will wish that I had a couple more snacks, a couple hundred more calories. My energy will be lower but it will be fine. My experience on these long distance trails helps a lot in these situations.
For this stretch I need to carry a bear can, it is required from mile 754-763, 779-807, and 929-997. I chose to use the BV450 since I already owned it, but wish I had the BV500 instead for the extra space for food. I personally do not like the bearikade that is made of carbon fiber even though it is slightly lighter, the sharp metal edges aren't comfortable while stored inside my pack. So heading into this section I planned to skimp myself on food purposefully, to make my small bear can work. What I did not plan for was to have the resupply stop be potentially closed.
Fortunately as I got close to the point of no return, I finally got word that Reds Meadow had just opened the day before, and that I would be able to buy food there afterall! Good timing or luck I am not sure. I was a bit ahead of schedule here so I think it is a bit of both.
I continue through this section hiking 30+ miles per day, and overall am happy with my ultralight backpacking kit and how that allows me to hike at this pace more comfortably.
