Before recent years, nails were commonly used to attach drywall to the wall studs. Over time, due to expansion and contraction or foundation shifting, these nails can work themselves loose and stop holding the drywall in place. As a result, you will see a small circle protruding from the drywall usually about 1/8" or so. In some cases you may actually see the head of a nail sticking out. This is a simple fix to reattach the drywall to the stud if you have nails that have "popped."
Note: Nail pops are common signs of a more serious foundation issue, especially if there are several in the same wall. Make sure to get any structural issues corrected first before addressing things that are cosmetic.
