NOAA's GOES East satellite captured this view of Hurricane Michael as the storm made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, at around 1:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018.
Data from NOAA and an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft revealed that the storm's maximum sustained winds increased to near 155 mph. At landfall, those hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 45 miles from the storm's center.
The National Hurricane Center warned those in the landfall area to shelter in place because hazardous winds can increase very quickly as the eye passes.
