This story aired on March 12, 2018. Sierah's Joughin's family was forced to relive the day they found out their daughter was missing through witness testimony. Including one of the last people believed to see her alive, Sierah's boyfriend.
Overcome with emotion as he took the stand, Josh Kolasinski and Sierah knew each other since they were kids, but had been dating for 7 years when she was kidnapped and killed.
On the evening of her disappearance, Josh was the last one to see her alive.
Sierah rode her bike to Josh's house and when it was time to leave, Josh got on his motorcycle to make sure she had company on her way back.
"She said she didn't need me by her side, so I kissed her and said goodbye," Kolasinski said.
Sierah's mother heard from Josh later that night, worried after Sierah was not answering her phone.
She assured the jury her daughter did not know James Worley.
The jury saw many pictures: A sock Sierah was wearing the night she went missing, as well as a piece of lingerie pictured on a model. The state said it was found in a barn on Worley's property, with Sierah's blood.
Just some pieces of unsettling evidence that will be part of this case, the jury will view and hear about. Much of that evidence was described in detail during the prosecution's opening statements.
"You will hear how she died due to mechanical asphyxiation. A yellow dog toy (was) pushed down her throat so far tied to secure it in her mouth, put in with such force it chipped her tooth," prosecutor Scott Haselman said.
And before the trial got underway, the jury was seated. Twelve men and women make up the jury alone with six alternates that were chosen. From what I see, the jury is made up of more men than women.
