Welcome to back to our Dream Bar Build! This week's cocktail is a drink called the Mary Pickford, and it's just as beautiful as the woman it was named after. Gladys Louise Smith, was better known by her stage name, Mary Pickford, and was one of the most well known women in the world during that age! She was a force to be reckoned with and was not only a brilliant actress (known mostly for her roles in silent films) but she was also a producer, and one of the original founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She fought to be paid the same as her male co-stars, including Charlie Chaplin, and got exactly what she asked for.
She was on a trip to Cuba with Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin for a film when a bartender at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba made her this drink. When it was originally published in 1928's "When It's Cocktail Time in Cuba" by Basil Woon the ingredients were listed as 1/3 White Rum, 2/3 Pineapple Juice, and a dash of Grenadine. It wasn't until Harry Cradock added his own twist when he published this recipe in the Savoy Cocktail book that the Maraschino Liqueur was added. This gave the Mary Pickford some extra depth and complexity that I fell in love with, so we are using his version today. Enjoy!
