COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKRC) - Lawmakers are considering new protections for domestic violence survivors.
Senate Bill 207 would categorize choking or non- fatal suffocation as felonious assault. Currently in Ohio, those crimes are misdemeanors.
The sponsor of the measure says it would help identify violent offenders who are likely to re-offend.
According to the Ohio Domestic Violence Network, a victim who survives choking from their partner is seven times more likely to be killed by that partner at a later date.
