Alnwick, Northumberland.
All the men of the village play a huge game of football, a tradition to celebrate the coming of Lent. The game has very few rules and most men appear to play in their suits and flat caps!
M/S of a group of men standing outside a castle, a bagpiper stands in the middle of them. M/S of the group of men walking up the driveway of the castle, a man in a top hat and tails passes one of the men a football. M/S of the procession of men coming through a large arches gate, crowds of children and men follow them.
M/S of a crowd of men and boys, they surround a man holding a football, the man kicks the ball and they all swarm forward. Various shots of the game being played in a field, there appears to be a sort of goal post in the foreground, it has been decorated with greenery.
Note: for shots of a similar football tradition, this time in Derbyshire, please see record for CELEBRATES THE ADVENT, also in G 1269.
Note: original issue sheet states this version was for 'Newcastle only'.
