Celebrating 30 years of the Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University

As more demanding environmental targets for, and constraints on, agricultural production are set, farmers argue that this could undermine their competitiveness relative to trading partners with lower standards. At the same time, environmentalists highlight the environmental footprint overseas and the fear that higher domestic standards could lead to greater reliance on imports that simply shift environmental stresses to exporting countries. This talk will explore how trade policy can better align with sustainability goals and discuss what greater coherence might mean for international trade rules.

Biography

Alan Matthews is Professor Emeritus of European Agricultural Policy at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. His research interests include agricultural policy, trade policy, and trade and development issues. He is a former President of the European Association of Agricultural Economists. Among his public policy contributions, he has been a member of three WTO dispute settlement and arbitration panels and is a former member of Ireland’s Climate Change Advisory Council. He is a regular contributor to the blog capreform.eu on issues relating to the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, and was presented with an award for excellence by the UK Agricultural Economics Society in 2014 for his outstanding contribution to public policy.
