How to Play Single String Licks in the Style of Yngwie Malmsteen - Shred Guitar Lesson
Yngwie Malmsteen is one of the premiere shred guitarists around. One of his signature techniques is to play single string licks at break neck speed. His licks encompass elements of classical and focus on speed and melody. In this lesson, Robert will teach you how to play single string licks in the style of Yngwie Malmsteen that you can use as an exercise or as an element to incorporate into your own solos.
Since this is a shred guitar lesson, it’s going to require some finger strength and dexterity. If you don’t already have those under your belt, this is a good way to get them. There are two examples in this video lesson. The first is an Yngwie Malmsteen inspired harmonic minor lick. The first example makes use of all four of your fingers and an alternate picking method that helps you control the ascending pattern Robert demonstrates. This is where finger strength and dexterity really come into play.
The second lick comes from a Gmaj scale. This is a variation on the same theme. Both of these licks allow you to practice other techniques as well, including sliding up to notes, bending, and repeating patterns for effect. Single string licks offer a lot of musical potential and are often employed by speed metal guitarists in ascending and descending form to really turn the notes out. SIngle string licks also force you to think more creatively because you are applying rhythmic variations to a series of notes in a limited capacity. Start off slow and get a feel for the way Robert shifts the patterns up the length of the neck, then gradually work the runs up to speed. This is a great lesson with a lot of awesome opportunities for developing your speed, fluidity, and some playing techniques frequently used in shred guitar playing.
