The Chinese Army released a new video demonstrating the QLU-11 sniper grenade launcher.
The launcher has a five or seven round drums. A bigger drum is available for the mounted scenario. The launcher fires 35mm grenades, and it has one of the most sophisticated fire control units of medium-weight grenade launchers. This ensures the grenade can be delivered at high accuracy, earning its name as a sniper grenade launcher. It can shoot grenades into bunker openings or windows a few hundred metres away, or hit a car-size target further away.
The QLU-11 has a semi-automatic fire control unit. The fire control computer can put information from the optics, range finder, and wind velocity measurement device together, then provide the shooter guidance to adjust the aiming point. This ensures that when fired, the grenade will have an accuracy that few launchers can match.
The 35mm grenade has high explosive and armour penetration versions. The export model is called LG5 and uses 40mm rounds. The LG5 appears on the battlefield in Yemen. The QLU-11 can be fired in full auto or single shot.
It is a medium-weight weapon that can be carried by one person, and another soldier carries additional ammunition. Here is a clip showing the launcher is able to hit a circle on an idled boat, demonstrating its accuracy.
The most common ammunition it has is the BGJ-5 "sniper" round. The grenade can hit a 1 metre circle at 600 meters. Trained shooters can put 3 grenades into a window or doorway of a building at that distance.
A tripod can help the launcher have better stability and accuracy, better suppressing enemy infantries hiding behind obstacles or machine gunners in bunkers at a closer range.
Including the bipod, the launcher weighs 12.9 kg. The tripod version weighs 23 kg. Amazingly, this is lighter than a Chinese 12.7mm machine gun.
The 35mm grenade can penetrate light armour with a dedicated anti-armor shape charge round. Its accuracy is said to be comparable to that of a sniper round.
Although the Chinese 35mm grenade is lighter than the western 40mm round, the accuracy offers much greater impact.
It is also reported that the manufacturer is intergrading a better fuse, likely a programable smart fuse, to offer real-time adjustable air-burst capability, ideal for defeating enemies hiding in trenches or behind solid objects.
The QLU-11 will soon have upgraded variants, and a new model of this type of sniper grenade launcher could enter the international market within a few years.
