(10 Jun 2014) Armed troops and police were out in force on the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, many of them assigned to protect the international teams who are in Brazil for the World Cup.
Soldiers armed with riot shields stood guard outside the Tulip Hotel, where the England football team were currently staying.
A truckload of troops also escorted the England team bus travelling to training on Tuesday morning, as a police helicopter followed overhead.
Military police were stationed outside the Caesar Hotel, which is accommodating the team from the Netherlands.
Braving the rain on Copacabana beach on Tuesday, metro worker Jose Amaro Gomes said that despite the increase in security forces there was no guarantee people that would be safe.
Brazilian defence officials have said around 160,000 police and soldiers would be deployed during the World Cup, at a cost of 856 million US dollars.
