What is maskne
Maskne, or mask acne is a type of breakout that results from wearing a face mask. Its basically the type of acne that is formed in facial areas due to friction, pressure, stretching, rubbing or occlusion.
How does maskne happen and how to prevent maskne
The first cause of maskne is: Rubbing. Masks can cause irritation through friction and chafing, almost like rug burn. The areas most at risk are the bridge of the nose and where elastic bands hit behind the ears. Also: The skin around the nose, mouth and chin — the places covered by a face mask — is very delicate, and over time, tightly fitting masks can put enough pressure on the skin to cause it to breakdown.
Number 2: Irritation: The material of a mask absorbs the skin’s natural oils. For some people, this leads to dryness and sensitivity. Residue from detergents and fabric softeners also gets stuck underneath the mask and can cause irritation. When irritation becomes inflammation, you see redness, dry patches, peeling, or dark marks. If you have a skin condition like rosacea or psoriasis, the inflammation can make it flare.
Number 3: Occlusion. Occlusion from a mask also causes issues. Pores get clogged and can become pimples or acne cysts. Further than this: Your breath trapped beneath the mask makes the skin surface warm and moist and you may have noticed that.. Besides regular acne, this environment can lead to a breakout called folliculitis, which is when yeast or bacteria infect your hair follicles.
5 Mask Acne Tips for maskne solutions and how to prevent maskne from coming on
1.) Wash your face first before wearing a mask. Dirt and oil on your skin will get trapped under the mask and can cause breakouts. So to beat this, Always put your mask on over a clean face. To wash, use a gentle cleanser that is fragrance free and oil free. Ive left the one I recommend in the description below, as well as all the products I recommend there too, so definitely check that out when you get a chance. Afterwards, Rinse with lukewarm water, and not hot. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the skin.
2.) Moisturize. You want to apply your moisturizer immediately after washing your face to get the most amount of hydration possible. A good moisturizer will have one of the following ingredients. Ceramides, Hyaluronic acid, or Dimethicone. These ingredients keeps your skin hydrated and acts like a barrier to friction from your mask. So moisturize before and if possible at the end of the day when you can safely take your mask off and unwind.
3.) Avoid the makeup. Its best to not wear makeup underneath your mask. Masks act like occlusive barriers, which means trapped makeup can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Also, residue from makeup can soil your mask fabric and you dont want that.
4.) Wear only clean masks: Dirt and oil from your skin plus bacteria from your mouth and nose is a bad combo and it all accumulates on your cloth mask. So to beat this, Keep a rotation of masks on hand and wash them after every use.
5.) When you are washing your mask, Stick to fragrance free laundry detergent. Fragrance within fabric can be an irritant and cause maskne faster than you think. So find a hypoallergenic laundry detergent that is less irritating and always follow the washing instructions on each mask. And After washing your mask, check its shape. If it no longer fits snugly (and comfortably), it is less protective and its time to replace it. Also on that note: The fabric of your mask is also important. Avoid synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, polyester, and rayon on the the layer that rests against your face. These are more likely to irritate your skin and cause breakouts vs traditional cotton ones.
